CAB-FORWARD - THE STORY OF SOUTHERN PACIFIC ARTICULATED LOCOMOTIVES

Robert J. Church

Kategorie:Knihy / Doprava
Nakladatelství:Kratville Publications, Omaha, Nebraska
Rok vydání:1968 - 1st Edition
Další informace:Vázaná, 216 stran + 6 rozkládacích plánů. Dobrý stav. Fotografie, plány, nákresy lokomotiv. Now considered a classic, this book is a thorough history of all the Southern Pacific's articulated locomotives, including the few classes that were of conventional design. The book opens with a clear explanation of the issues that gave rise to the need for a new design, why Mallets proved inadequate, and how the transition to "cab-forward" was made. It then provides a detailed chronology of the locomotive's development, class by class (MC-1, -2, -4, -6, MM-1, -2, and -3, AC-1, -2, -3, AM-2, and AC-4 through AC-12). Nearly a third of the book is devoted to a detailed outline of SP's operating procedures, with each of the seven routes discussed individually, with special attention given to the unquestionable domain of these mountain battlers, "The Hill" on the Overland Route. Another large section provides a complete analysis of modern steam locomotive maintenance. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos as well as diagrams. With oversized foldout schematic diagrams of several of the AC locomotives and one of the tenders attached in the back. With numerous charts of technical date and a list of retirement dates. 216 pages.
