The Brothers Four were a folk group formed at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1957, and were part of the folk boom of the late ‘50s alongside the likes of The Kingston Trio. They played at clubs up and down the west coast after graduating and after meeting Dave Brubeck’s manager in San Francisco in 1959 got a recording deal with Columbia. They had a big hit with their second single “Greenfields” and had more hits through into the 1960s, as well as becoming prolific album sellers. This 56-track 2-CD collection comprises all their A & B sides on Columbia from this era, plus 31 selected titles from their five LPs from these years not otherwise released on singles. It includes tracks from their albums “Rally Round”, “The Brothers Four”, “Song Book”, “Best Music On/Off Campus” and “Roamin’”. It features the No. 2 hit “Greenfields” plus their other chart entries from these years “Green Leaves Of Summer” (from the movie “The Alamo”), “My Tani”, “Frogg” and “Blue Water Line”. This is folk music that was very much evocative of its era, and this collection is a substantial showcase for their particular brand of close-harmony folk. |
